Hacienda

A haven of stillness that unites Spanish influences and Deccan roots.

Inspired by the traditional hacienda architecture of Spain and Mexico, this residence reimagines the typology as a contemporary family home in Coimbatore. Designed as a low-rise, horizontally spread dwelling, it is deeply rooted in its tropical context, balancing openness with intimacy. The home emerges as a seamless extension of the landscape, offering a tranquil, immersive living experience shaped by light, materiality, and climate responsiveness.

CONCEPT & EXECUTION

The design interprets hacienda principles through a minimalist and regionally attuned lens. Stucco walls, clay-tiled roofs, deep arches, and shaded openings define the architectural language, while courtyards and transitional spaces dissolve boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Spatial planning places communal functions on the ground level and private zones above, ensuring both connectivity and retreat. Passive strategies—filtered daylight, ventilation, and shaded envelopes—enhance comfort while reinforcing the home’s relationship with its environment.

MARRYING THE LAND AND SPACES

The home is embedded within a verdant setting, with rooms opening into courtyards, terraces, and landscaped pockets. This porous planning fosters continuous visual and spatial connections with the outdoors.

THE ENVELOPE

A composition of deep-set windows, overhangs, and arches shapes the built form, moderating light and heat. The horizontal massing strengthens the dialogue between architecture and land.

A QUIET RENDEZVOUS

Terraces, decks, balconies, and garden nooks create intimate zones within the larger framework, allowing the family to engage with the home at varied scales of privacy.

ARCHITECTURE WEAVING NARRATIVES

Movement through the house reveals framed views of courtyards, orchards, and water elements. The vaulted pool lounge and elongated indoor pool offer a dramatic, immersive spatial experience.

SEQUESTERED IN SERENITY

The arched library forms a quiet retreat, animated by soft daylight from skylights. A sculptural staircase within a double-height volume anchors circulation and spatial transitions.

WHEN THE OLD AND NEW COLLIDE

The dining space draws from rustic, old-world references, complemented by a tropical mural and sculptural lighting. It overlooks a courtyard and pond, becoming a central space for gathering.

BLURRING BOUNDARIES

The master suite opens out through expansive glazing, dissolving the threshold between built form and landscape. This sense of continuity extends across the home, where courtyards and transitional spaces weave together moments of pause, gathering, and retreat. Rooted in a restrained, locally driven material palette, the interiors balance contemporary, Mediterranean, and mid-century influences, allowing the home to conclude as a cohesive, immersive environment shaped equally by architecture and its surroundings.

I told MuseLAB that I wanted to feel like I am on vacation every single day - and they truly delivered.
